WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE
My name is Diego Pascual y Cabo. I am an Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics as well as the Director of the Spanish Heritage Language Program at the University of Florida.
I am an applied linguist who studies and cares deeply about Spanish heritage speaker bilingualism. In my work, not only am I intentional about raising critical language awareness, I am also committed to dispelling negative and simplistic ideologies about minoritized bilinguals and their linguistic practices. I teach, research, and speak widely about these issues.
A BIT ABOUT ME
- My primary research interest is Spanish heritage speaker bilingualism. Over the past few years, I have led or assisted with the publication of over 60 research papers. My work on this topic has appeared in leading international academic journals such as Applied Linguistics, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Research Methods in Applied Linguistics, Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism, Heritage Language Journal, and Foreign Language Annals (among others).
- As a teacher, I am passionate about the pursuit of a more equitable, less oppressive, and more critically conscious education. As a mentor, I seek to support students in achieving their personal and academic goals, whatever those may be.
- As testimony of my personal and professional commitment to the field, in 2014, I founded the Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language, which has since become an annual event in the field of heritage speaker bilingualism. In 2025, the symposium will be held at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). I am also the founder and Editor-in-chief of the Spanish Heritage Language journal, an international refereed journal co-published by the University of Florida Press and the Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida.
- For my collective efforts in teaching, research and service, I have received a number of awards. Among these, the more notable being the 2021 University of Florida-College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Teaching Award, the 2017 Texas Tech University New Faculty Award, and the 2014 National Heritage Language Resource Center - Russ Campbell Young Scholar Award.
